Homer Price by Robert McCloskey. It was originally published in 1943.
I can't remember the stories in the book much at all but I specificly remember in one of the tales that someone's diamond ring gets baked into a giant batch donuts.
Part of me wonders if this book is how Matt Groening came up with Homer Simpson and *his* love of donuts.
For a short time I remember we owned a dog that I named Homer after this book since it was pre-Simpsons childhood.
I would looooove to find a copy of this book again to own.
I would also love to eat a donut right now.
